ABOUT Terra

In the year 2431, a meteor the size of the moon was dislodged from the main belt orbiting in the space between Mars and Jupiter. Astronomers on Earth caught wind of the recent development, but their calculations indicated that the meteor would pass by Earth by a rather large margin. Unfortunately, a lab assistant in charge of some basic arithmetic forgot to carry a few zeroes. In 2501, the meteor passed by the planet closer than the moon’s average orbital distance. All attempts to either alter the meteor’s course of motion or destroy the rock outright failed. The gravitational pull of the temporary satellite caused a massive reaction under the Earth’s surface. The top layer of the mantle experienced a sudden decrease in viscosity - becoming more fluid as the meteor passed.

Upon its departure from the planet’s immediate vicinity, the mantle’s upper layers moved violently at a much faster pace than the old natural rate. The accelerated motion caused greater disturbances along the Earth’s surface. Volcanic eruptions were more prevalent, along with other natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis. A combination of these factors caused multiple small-scale extinctions across the planet, and the human population dwindled from 12 billion to 6 billion over the course of two thousand years.

The movement of the tectonic plates was immediate, but still gradual. Changes were not noticeable by the surviving humans. Losses in technology and the rising and falling of empires, dark ages and industrial revolutions, and a near-total “reset” to the Stone Age dotted the time in between the first stages of motion to the modern day - 500,000 years into the future.

Welcome to the new supercontinent of Terra. The year is 5X208.
